During the 1940′s in Mexico, the peso dropped so far in value that artisans began melting them down to create jewelry that was worth more than the coins themselves. In the 1950′s and 60′s, motorcycle gangs from the U.S. would travel down to border cities like Tijuana to acquire these rings, which were so heavy that they could put one on every finger for a legal set of brass knuckles.
